Undoubtedly, the combination of an internationally significant archaeological and historical site associated with the application of the latest ‘hightech’ ensured that the project garnered the attention of broadcaster the press, as well as academic and other cultural heritage audiences. In its day the solid modelling technology used to generate this landmark in archaeological visualisation was cutting edge. This project might been seen as the fuse that ignited an explosion of creativity in the creation and presentation of hypothetical interpretations and reconstructions of cultural heritage to a broad-based, international audience in a virtual form. The 'minster movie' was the product of an innovative collaboration environment which brought together archaeologists and computer scientists specialising in 3D computer modelling and graphics systems. The Old Minster, Winchester models and animations were remarkable in 1984-6 for producing the earliest animated virtual tours of a computer-generated interpretive visualisation of lost cultural heritage using experimental solid modelling software.
